Medicine prices cannot be increased willingly: State Minister for Health

State Minister for Health Dr. M. A. Muhit  has said that, while it is important to protect the interests of the industry,  in the same way  the people and the government can not be put in danger by increasing the prices of medicine time to time. He made the remarks at the Hotel Sonargaon in the capital on Monday while addressing as the Chief  guest at a program titled on "Stakeholder Consultation Meeting with the Private Sector: Capacity Boosting of  the Health Sector". The program was jointly organized by the Health Services Division and the World Bank.

He further said, country's many hospitals have not received the minimum maintenance for the past 5 to7 years. On the other hand, some hospitals have building but no equipment and some have a shortage of medicine. We are doing work keeping this challenge in mind, he added.

Stressing on a balanced policy on drug pricing, the State Minister said, Medicine companies are the business institutions and they need to make profits. Just as it is not right to keep the drug prices fixed year after year even when the prices of everything else increase, Muhit  added and said again that we also do not want any policy that can increase the price of medicine in any time. In addition, our main goal is to maintain a balance position, so that the people and the government are not put in danger in any way, he added. 

DG Health Dr. Probhat Chandra Biswas, Health Ministry Additional Secretary  Saiful Islam, Pharmaceuticals companies owners, different representatives of the private health sector and senior officials of the Ministry concerned were present at the event.
