World Nurses Day celebrated at BMU
 
Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) celebrated World Nurses Day 2026 on Tuesday through a series of colorful programs, including a rally, discussion meeting, tree plantation campaign, and cultural events.

The celebration began on Tuesday with the hoisting of the national and university flags, followed by the release of balloons and pigeons to officially inaugurate the rally on the BMU campus. The program was inaugurated by the Honorable Vice-Chancellor, F M Siddiqui.

Carrying the theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future – Empowering Nurses to Save Lives,” the rally marched across the BMU campus and concluded at the Super Specialized Hospital. 

Later, a discussion meeting was held at the A Block Auditorium of BMU. Addressing the event as the chief guest, the Honorable Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development), Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, emphasized the need to elevate BMU’s nursing services to international standards.
He described nursing as a noble and sacred profession and stressed the importance of advancing nursing education, research, and healthcare services to a global standard in order to save lives and ensure quality healthcare for the people of Bangladesh. He also encouraged nurses to overcome challenges and move forward with confidence and dedication.

Speaking as a special guest, Treasurer Nahreen Akhter said the contribution of nurses to healthcare is immeasurable. She highlighted the need for creating more positions, ensuring accommodation facilities, and strengthening training workshops for the professional development of nurses.

Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, Md. Monir Hossain Khan, stated that nursing education in Bangladesh has advanced significantly. He noted that BMU has already created opportunities for obtaining BSc Nursing, MSc Nursing, and PhD degrees.

However, he added that much more remains to be done to improve nursing services in the country. He urged nurses to serve patients with compassion, empathy, and professionalism, emphasizing the importance of humane behavior in patient care. 

Other speakers expressed hope that BMU nurses would establish themselves as exemplary role models in the field of nursing service. The program concluded with an enjoyable cultural performance.

Among those present at the event were Director (Hospital) Brigadier General Irteka Rahman, Chairman of the Graduate Nursing Department Associate Professor Harun Or Rashid Gazi, Associate Professor (Surgical Oncology) Dr. Md. Jahangir Hossain, Deputy Director (Hospital) Dr. Mohammad Abu Naser, Assistant Professor of Hematology and Deputy Registrar (Education) Dr. Nasrin Akter, Private Secretary-2 to the Vice-Chancellor Md. Lutfor Rahman, Service Superintendent Rashida Begum, Associate Professor Delowara Begum, Assistant Professors Hasina Akter, Nupur D’Costa and Bithika Mali, Lecturers Tumpa Gharami, Naeema Siddika, Dipika Majumdar and Sujan Mia, along with several deputy service superintendents and nurses of BMU. The event saw enthusiastic participation from nurses across the university.
