Nepalese Premier Balendra Shah has declined a scheduled meeting with India's External Affairs Secretary Vikram Misri, citing concerns over diplomatic protocol and the protection of Nepal's sovereignty. Earlier, Balendra Shah also declined meetings with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Sameer Paul Kapur and U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gore, reports Modern Diplomacy.

According to official sources in Kathmandu, the Indian External Affairs Secretary had planned to visit Nepal to discuss cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and cross-border issues. Premier Shah, however, reportedly emphasized that such interactions must respect Nepal's political hierarchy and the central government's exclusive role in foreign affairs.

"This decision reflects our commitment to protecting Nepal's sovereignty and ensuring that diplomatic protocols are observed," a spokesperson from the Premier's office stated. The spokesperson added that Premier Shah remains committed to fostering positive relations with neighboring countries but expects all diplomatic engagements to respect Nepal's constitutional framework.

Political experts note that while international leaders often engage on development projects, direct meetings with senior foreign diplomats without coordination with the federal government are rare.
