Valiant freedom fighter and former minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain is no more. The veteran politician passed away yesterday, Wednesday (May 13), at 10:00 am while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital. He was 83 years old.
Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, a Presidium member of the now-banned Bangladesh Awami League policymaking forum, was elected Member of Parliament seven times from the Chattogram-1 (Mirsharai) constituency.
Awarded the country's highest civilian honor, the Independence Award, in 2019, the veteran politician had a distinguished political career. He was the son of S. Rahman, a member of the former East Pakistan Provincial Council. Mosharraf Hossain was born in 1943 in Dhum Union of Mirsharai. His grandfather was also a public representative and served as chairman of the Union Parishad for 20 years.
Engineer Mosharraf Hossain completed his matriculation from Chittagong Collegiate School and passed his higher secondary examination in 1962 from Sir Ashutosh Government College. He later enrolled in a BSc program in Mining Engineering at the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore.
While living in West Pakistan, he became actively involved in the Six-Point Movement. He also served as president of the East Pakistan Student Council. In 1966, he chaired a gathering in Lahore organized by the East Pakistan Student Council, a platform of students from East Pakistan studying there, where he highlighted the justification of the Six-Point demands.
