Professor Nripendra Lal Das and noted Tagore artiste Bulbul Islam have received 'Rabindra Award 2026' at the Abdul Karim Sahitya Bisharad Auditorium of Bangla Academy in the capital on Monday (May 11).
Bangla Academy President Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque and Director General Professor Mohammad Azam handed over the awards to them.
Professor Nripendra Lal Das got the award for his contributions to Rabindranath Tagore research, while Bulbul Islam has been recognised for his work in Rabindra Sangeet.
The two awardees were presented with a cheque of one lakh taka, a commemorative plaque, a certificate and a wreath at the ceremony organized to mark the 165th birth anniversary of world poet Rabindranath Tagore.
The speakers at the ceremony said that there is no alternative to research, literary practice and music practice to highlight Rabindranath more deeply to the new generation. The contribution of the awardees in spreading Rabindranath's thought and human consciousness is particularly noteworthy.
In his welcome speech, Bangla Academy Director General Mohammad Azam said that Rabindranath's world of literature and thought is still equally relevant. He said that Rabindranath needs to be evaluated in contemporary social reality through a new reading and analysis. At the event, fiction writer Prashanta Mridha presented a keynote speech on 'Rabindranath's Literature'. Nasima Anis and Raihan Rain participated in the discussion. They highlighted the multidimensional presentation of human life in Rabindranath's stories and novels.
Expressing his feelings about receiving the award, Professor Nripendralal Das said that such recognition of his long-term research on Rabindranath will make him more responsible. He expressed his determination to continue working on Rabindranath's literature in the future.
Artist Bulbul Islam said that recognition from an institution like Bangla Academy is one of the biggest achievements of his artistic career. He expressed his hope to work more actively in the practice and promotion of Rabindra Sangeet.
In the cultural part of the event, Rabindra Sangeet was performed by Laisa Ahmed Lisa and Farhin Khan Joyita. In addition, Rabindra Kavita was recited by Nasim Ahmed. The event was conducted by Bangla Academy's Associate Director Dr. Mahbuba Rahman.
