Orion Group Chairman Obaidul Karim and his wife Arjuda Karim applied for permission to travel to India, Singapore, or the United Arab Emirates for emergency medical treatment, but the court denied the request. On Thursday, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md. Sabbir Faiz rejected their application.
Riyaz Hossain, the bench assistant of the concerned court, confirmed the information. Obaidul Karim and Arjuda Karim had submitted the application through their lawyer on May 4, seeking permission to
travel abroad for urgent medical treatment. After an initial hearing last week, the court had scheduled Thursday for a further hearing on the matter.During the hearing, the applicants were represented by several lawyers, including Masud Ahmed Talukder, a member of the advisory council to the BNP chairperson, and Md. Borhan Uddin, also a council member and chief prosecutor in the BDR mutiny case.
They requested the court to allow the accused individuals to travel to India, Singapore, or the UAE for emergency treatment. On behalf of the state, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki and Anti-Corruption Commission prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi opposed the application.
After hearing arguments, the court kept the order pending. Later, Chief Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki informed journalists that the application had been rejected.
Following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the court on February 17 last year imposed a travel ban on Obaidul Karim and his family members.
