Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard and Bangladesh Navy arrested 33 smugglers along with 2,400 sacks of cement and 3 boats during a joint drive in Saint Martin on Sunday.
Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan, media officer at coast guard headquarters, confirmed the information on Sunday morning.
He said, "Acting a tip-off, a joint operation was conducted in the sea area adjacent to the southwest of St. Martin. During the operation, 33 smugglers, including 2,400 bags of cement worth Tk 16.8 lakh and 3 boats used for smuggling, were arrested during a search of 3 suspicious fishing boats in the area." Initial interrogation of the arrested smugglers revealed that they were loading cement from various places in Hatiya and Sandwip through the 3 fishing boats and were going to supply it to banned groups in Myanmar.
