State seeks stay on HC order barring Ivy's arrest without specific case

The state has filed an application seeking a stay on the High Court order that directed authorities not to show former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy as arrested or harass her without a specific case. On Tuesday, Ivy's lawyer, Motahar Hossain Saju, confirmed the matter.

In the early hours of May 9 last year, around 3:00 am, Ivy was arrested from Chunka Kutir, her residence in the Deobhog area of the city. She was later shown arrested in several cases. Subsequently, the High Court granted her bail in five cases. However, following an appeal by the state, the Appellate Division stayed those bail orders.

Later, on November 18, she was shown arrested in five more cases. On February 26, the court granted her bail in those cases as well. But after applications from the state, those bail orders were also stayed. Most recently, the Appellate Division upheld the bail granted in all 10 cases. Meanwhile, police from Siddhirganj Police Station applied to show Ivy arrested in two murder cases filed on September 11, 2024, and June 30, 2025.

In one case, the Narayanganj Chief Judicial Magistrate approved the application to show her arrested on March 2, and in the other case on April 12. A writ petition was later filed challenging the legality of the process of showing her arrested in those cases.

After a hearing, on April 26, the High Court issued a rule asking why the "shown arrested" orders in the two separate cases filed with Siddhirganj Police Station should not be declared beyond legal authority and contrary to fundamental rights.

The High Court also directed the authorities not to show the petitioner arrested or harass her without a specific case. The state has now filed an application with the Appellate Division seeking a stay on that High Court order.
