An elite force will be there even if RAB is renamed: Jahed Ur Rahman

Prime Minister's Adviser on Information and Broadcasting, Dr. Jahed Ur Rahman, has said that the Ministry of Home Affairs will decide whether the name of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) will remain unchanged. However, he noted that even if the name changes, such an elite force will continue to exist, reports Deutsche Welle (DW).

He said that the state needs this kind of elite force, and there should be no opportunity to use it in ways that violate human rights.

He made these remarks on Tuesday during a weekly press briefing at the Secretariat regarding the progress of various government activities.

The Prime Minister's Adviser on Information and Broadcasting said, "They (RAB) have good equipment and training. Therefore, an elite force will remain, whether under the name RAB or another name, and there will be a well-defined law governing it."

During the Awami League government, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), along with many others, had demanded the dissolution of RAB. When asked about this issue, he replied, "In one sense, RAB is no longer continuing in the same way as before. Just yesterday, the Home Minister announced that there will be a new law for RAB. Again, I am saying that in one sense, RAB will no longer remain as it was before, and its name will probably also be changed."

Regarding the necessity of the force, he further said, "If we set aside the criticisms of RAB, we will see that RAB has very competently dealt with various forms of terrorism, something that our conventional police force was unable to manage."
