Barishal has reported two more deaths of children with measles symptoms at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH).
The dead have been identified as 2-year-old Jihad and 7-month-old Habiba, both identified by their single names, bdnews24.com.
"Both children succumbed to severe pneumonia developed from measles," SBMCH Director Brigadier General Mashiul Munir said on Tuesday. With these latest casualties, the death toll from suspected measles complications at the hospital has risen to 24. The hospital has seen admission of 2,286 patients with measles symptoms this year, including 52 over the past 24 hours. Currently, 198 patients remain under treatment at the facility. Mohammad Lokman Hakim, acting director of the Barishal Divisional health directorate, reported that 147 people exhibited measles symptoms across the division in the last 24 hours, leading to 140 new hospitalisations in different government facilities. Suspected measles cases in the division surged to 5,950, with 175 cases officially confirmed through laboratory testing.
The outbreak has claimed a total of 37 lives across the division.
SBMCH has recorded the highest fatalities with 24 deaths, followed by six in Bhola, five in Barguna, and two in Jhalakathi.
