Telecommunications Minister inaugurates free Wi-Fi service at HSIA

As part of the government's vision of building a modern, fast and reliable Digital Bangladesh, free Wi-Fi services have been launched at airports and other important public facilities across the country.

Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology and Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam, made the remarks while speaking to journalists at the inauguration of the free Wi-Fi service at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport today.

The Minister said the government has been implementing a series of initiatives in line with the Prime Minister's development vision and directives. He noted that the public is already aware of the progress of various welfare-oriented initiatives, including Family Cards and Agriculture Cards. In continuation of these efforts, another important commitment has now been fulfilled, which will further accelerate the country's digital transformation.

"This achievement is not merely a project; it is a reflection of our commitment to public service," he added. Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam said that, in line with the government's manifesto, improved internet services have been introduced at airports, railway stations and other key facilities to ensure fast and reliable public services.

"Our primary goal is to ensure convenience for expatriates and passengers. The development initiatives undertaken over the past two and a half months are being implemented gradually, and more services will be expanded in the future," she said. The Minister also said that the upcoming launch of the airport's third terminal would open a new horizon for the country's aviation sector, adding that the achievement had been made possible through the cooperation of all concerned stakeholders.

Prime Minister's Adviser Rehan Asif Asad said that the service has been launched simultaneously at a total of eight airports and six railway stations, including Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. He said nearly 250 access points have been installed from the airport parking area to the boarding bridges to ensure uninterrupted internet connectivity.

"Over the past few days alone, more than 20,000 passengers at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport have used the service, consuming around 2.3 terabytes of data. Currently, nearly 1,800 users can use the service simultaneously," he added. He further said the government's objective is to ensure that ordinary passengers-particularly people from remote rural areas-can easily access fast and free internet services throughout all stages of travel, including check-in, immigration and boarding.

"This initiative marks the beginning of a broader expansion plan. We will gradually expand the service to more airports and transport hubs across the country," he added. The Minister and the Adviser also visited different areas of the airport to inspect the performance and effectiveness of the Wi-Fi service.

Among others present at the event were Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam, State Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat, the Executive Director of the airport, and senior officials of BTCL and Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

It may be mentioned that free Wi-Fi services have already been introduced at eight major airports and six railway stations across the country. These include Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Shah Amanat International Airport, Cox's Bazar International Airport, Shah Makhdum Airport, Saidpur Airport, Osmani International Airport, Barishal Airport and Jessore Airport.
