Bangladesh government's Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan had courtesy meetings with British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke and Swiss Ambassador Reto Renggli yesterday.
According to a press release from the ministry, State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasir Khan Chowdhury was also present at the meeting held on Thursday morning at the minister's office.
Minister Swapan said, "The current government is committed to ensuring freedom of the media. To this end, the government has begun work on establishing a Media Commission."
The minister expressed interest in utilizing the experience of Ofcom - the UK's communications regulatory authority - in Bangladesh.
He said, "Ofcom's experience can be used in formulating policies for Bangladesh's media sector."
Assuring cooperation in this regard, Sarah Cooke discussed Ofcom's activities during the meeting.
The information minister said, "We also want to protect people from misinformation and disinformation."
At the meeting, State Minister Yasir Khan said, "Although artificial intelligence has opened the door to new possibilities, it has also created a global challenge."
He also called on the Swiss ambassador to come forward with investments in various sectors in Bangladesh, including technology.
