A blockade of a key intersection in Mirpur has spawned several gridlocks as locals demonstrated demanding justice for Ramisa Akter, the child who was raped and brutally murdered in Pallabi.
The blockade, which started following Jummah prayers around 3pm, ended after almost three hours, around 6pm on Friday, bdnews24 reports.
The demonstration at the busy Mirpur-10 intersection brought vehicular movement acroos the area to a near standstill.
The Mirpur Traffic Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police posted on its Facebook page during the protest, urging commuters to use alternative routes and exercise patience while traffic police worked to restore normal vehicle flow.
Local shop worker Abu Rayhan said the protesters blocked the roundabout to demand exemplary punishment for the culprits.
"The demonstrators demanded that the criminal be punished in public," Rayhan said.
On Tuesday morning, police recovered the dismembered body of 7-year-old Ramisa from her neighbours' flat in Pallabi.
Police arrested the primary suspect Sohel Rana along with his wife.
Police said Sohel has already confessed to the crime in court.
The government has assured the victim's family of a swift investigation and speedy trial.
On Thursday night, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited Ramisa's family at their home to offer condolences.
