A member of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) was stabbed to death by a suspected drug dealer in Sylhet on Friday morning.
The deceased was identified as Emon Acharya, a member of Rab-9. He hailed from from Hathazari upazila in Chattogram, according to police.
Confirming the incident, Sylhet Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner (media) Md Manjurul Alam said, "The incident took place around noon near Keane Bridge in Sylhet city."
"Several people were consuming and selling drugs near Keane Bridge when police chased them. As the suspected drug dealers attempted to flee, Rab member Emon, who was in plain clothes at the scene, caught hold of one of them. The accused immediately stabbed him," he said.
Police later detained the accused, identified as Asadul Alam Bappy, from the scene immediately after the incident.
According to Rab-9 sources, Emon was critically injured in the stabbing attack and was taken to Osmani Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
