Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has said that no one will be allowed to face harassment through cases based on false allegations without specific evidence of wrongdoing. He also stated that if there are specific crimes or allegations, action will be taken in accordance with the country's existing laws.

He made these remarks on Monday (June 1), while speaking with journalists in his office at the Secretariat on the first working day after the long Eid holiday.

The minister said that media leaders, newspaper editors, and owners have already held meetings with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

According to him, they stated that this was the first time they had been able to practice journalism without restrictions. They said that no pressure had been exerted on them by any group or from any level of government.

He further said that many of the cases filed in different places in the post-authoritarian period were expressions of public anger, protests, and the reactions of victims.

However, as a new government, it must assess how well-founded and organized those cases are and determine to what extent they may be disorganized or improperly filed.

The minister added that during his meeting with journalists, the Prime Minister clearly stated that no one would be allowed to be harassed through false accusations in the absence of specific evidence of a crime. However, where there are specific crimes or allegations, judicial proceedings will continue under the country's existing laws.
