India's Border Security Force (BSF) has allegedly pushed 10-13 people across the border through the Benapole frontier in Sharsha Upazila of Jashore, Bangladesh.
According to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the individuals are currently staying in the no-man's-land area at a straw field known as Bombay Tala in Sadipur village along the Benapole border. BGB officials shared this information with BBC Bangla.
At around 4:45 p.m. on Monday, Lieutenant Colonel Golam Mohammad Saiful Alam Khan, commander of the 49 BGB Battalion in Jashore, told BBC Bangla that the individuals had been forced across the barbed-wire fence at approximately 3:30 to 3:45 a.m. the previous night. However, they have not yet crossed the international border.
He said that BGB had received prior
intelligence that attempts might be made to push people into Bangladesh through several points along the Benapole border. As a result, BGB had already taken precautionary positions based on border maps.
According to him:
"Yesterday, approximately 100-120 people arrived in three truck-like vehicles and deliberately switched off the lights attached to the barbed-wire fence at various locations. They opened the gates and attempted to push people through. But we were prepared in advance and did not allow them to succeed."
He added:
"We increased our manpower by two to three times and strengthened our use of flashlights and torches. We did not let them succeed, and we have also preserved video footage of the incidents. They kept trying throughout the night. But at around 3:30 a.m., they again switched off the lights and forcibly pushed around 10 to 13 people across the barbed-wire fence. Even now, they have not been able to cross the international border."
He further stated that the situation has continued since Monday morning and that BGB has repeatedly tried to communicate with the BSF.
"We have informed them that these are not our people. If they are indeed Bangladeshi nationals, they should be returned through proper diplomatic channels, with the necessary travel documents, and through any authorized international border crossing. In that case, we will accept them."
Local journalists in Benapole reported that the group waiting in the no-man's-land area includes women and children.
