As part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard the country's vast maritime territory, strengthen maritime security, and uphold good governance at sea, the Bangladesh Navy continues to conduct regular patrols and operational activities across the country's waters. In line with these efforts, the Navy on Tuesday seized two engine-powered boats carrying 1,700 sacks of cement from the Bay of Bengal near Saint Martin’s Island, according to an ISPR press release.
While conducting a routine patrol, a Bangladesh Navy warship spotted two suspicious wooden fishing boats approximately 19 nautical miles from the Saint Martin’s Lighthouse. Observing unusual movements, the naval vessel pursued and intercepted the boats, identified as “Ma-2” and “Nishan-2.”
A subsequent search of the vessels led to the recovery of 900 sacks of cement from Ma-2 and 800 sacks from Nishan-2, totaling 1,700 sacks. During the operation, 20 members of the smuggling syndicate were also detained. According to the detainees, the cement was being transported to Myanmar for illegal sale in pursuit of higher profits. Following the operation, the seized cement and the detained individuals were handed over to Teknaf Police Station for further legal proceedings.
The Bangladesh Navy remains committed to preventing smuggling, ensuring maritime security, and protecting the country's maritime interests through continuous surveillance and enforcement operations.
