AL leader Rahmat Ullah passes away

Five-time Member of Parliament from Dhaka and senior Awami League (AL) leader, A.K.M. Rahmat Ullah, has passed away.

The veteran politician, who had been undergoing treatment at Square Hospital for a prolonged period, died at around 3:45 a.m. on Wednesday. He was 76 years old. A valiant Freedom Fighter, Rahmat Ullah remained a member of the Advisory Council of the Bangladesh Awami League until his death. He was also a highly influential figure in the politics of the Dhaka Metropolitan Awami League.

When contacted, a customer service representative at Square Hospital named Mizanur said, "A.K.M. Rahmat Ullah passed away early this morning. His family members collected the body from the hospital later in the morning." Rahmat Ullah's nephew, Faruk Hossain, told BDNews24.com, "He passed away at 3:45 a.m. today. After receiving the news, we went to the hospital and brought his body to his residence in Beraid, Badda."

Faruk said that Rahmat Ullah would be laid to rest at Beraid Cemetery following his funeral prayer (janaza), scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Beraid Field.

Rahmat Ullah, who previously served as President of the Dhaka North Awami League, was elected to Parliament five times as a public representative.
