PM Tarique Rahman Meets Bangladeshi UN General

Lieutenant General Mohammad Asadullah Minhazul Alam, the Bangladesh Army officer chosen to lead the UN peacekeeping mission in Cyprus, has met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman before taking up his new role.
The meeting took place at the Secretariat on Wednesday afternoon, said the Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary Mostafa Zulfiquar Hasan.
According to him, the Army officer met the premier before leaving for Cyprus to take up his new responsibilities.
"Discussions were held on Bangladesh's role in UN peacekeeping operations, professionalism, and upholding the reputation and glory of the Armed Forces in the international arena," added Zulfiquar Hasan.
On April 9, Lt General Minhazul Alam was appointed as the 23rd force commander of the UNFICYP. He is the eighth Bangladeshi Army officer to be assigned as the head of a UN peacekeeping mission.
He will leave for the UN Headquarters in New York next Friday to take up his new assignment.
Before assuming his new assignment, Lt General Minhazul Alam was the general officer commanding (GOC) of the Training and Doctrine Command of the Bangladesh Army.
According to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), a total of 10 military officers from countries including Bangladesh are serving as force commanders in 10 UN peacekeeping missions currently.
Of them, Major General Md Fakhrul Ahsan is leading the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).
With Lt General Minhazul Alam's appointment to UNFICYP, Bangladesh will have two Army officers simultaneously leading UN peacekeeping missions.
