Shafik Rehman elected to lead National Editors Council

The National Editors Council (NEC) has been formed with the aim of protecting the independence of newspapers, improving the standards of journalism, and safeguarding the professional interests of editors.  Editors of various daily newspapers decided to establish this council at a meeting held at the office of Dainik Amar Desh on Tuesday.

At the meeting, Shafik Rehman, Editor of Jaijaidin, was appointed convener and Mahmudur Rahman, editor of Amar Desh, was made joint convener, forming a 13-member convening committee.

The other members of this committee are:

Salah Uddin Mohammad Babar, editor of Naya Diganta
Hasan Hafiz, editor of Kaler Kantho
Abdul Hai Shikdar, editor of Jugantor
Maruf Kamal Khan Sohel, editor of Protidiner Bangladesh
Azam Mir Shahidul Ahsan, editor of Sangram
Mokarram Hossain, editor of New Nation
Shafiqul Alam, editor of Wada
Shahidul Islam, editor of Manabkantha
Shantanu Islam Sumit, editor of Loksamaj
Osman Gani Mansur, editor of Daily People's View
Muktabis Un Noor, editor of Jalalabad.

In a statement regarding the National Editors Council, it was said that the editors unanimously agreed on the necessity of forming this new organization to end the deterioration of the media that occurred during the long one-and-a-half-decade rule of fascism.

At the meeting, decisions were taken to draft the organization's constitution, organize training programs aimed at improving the professional excellence of journalists, and, as soon as possible, hold a national convention involving editors of national and regional daily newspapers.
