People's involvement key to roll back dengue: Muhit

State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr. M A Muhit on Saturday said  that overall public health development is not possible solely through hospital construction, government initiatives, or doctors' efforts and thus dengue can be controlled by involving the people.

"Without active participation and awareness of the people, it is difficult to tackle public health challenges including dengue," he said while speaking as chief guest at a rally organized on the occasion of the launch of a three-month-long mosquito control and public awareness program, initiated by Dhaka North City Corporation at Gulshan Central Park, BSS reports.

The state minister said that the government will take effective steps to control dengue by engaging the public, in cooperation with Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and all other city corporations across the country.

The State Minister said, "Major national-level programs have been successful by involving the people. For example, the measles vaccination campaign managed to bring nearly 2 crore children under vaccination coverage in a short period of time. Similarly, public participation is most crucial in controlling dengue."

He further said, "If every citizen takes dengue prevention as their own responsibility, brings positive changes to their daily lives, keeps their homes and surroundings clean, and makes their neighbours, friends, and relatives aware, then the dengue situation can be brought under control to a large extent."

Mentioning that the government is implementing various programs to ensure public health, the State Minister said, "A developed nation cannot be built without a healthy population. The true benefits of a nation's development are ensured only when that development plays a role in improving people's health and quality of life."

The event was chaired by DNCC Administrator Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan.
