Earthquake jolts Dhaka, other parts of country


Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh felt tremors from a moderate earthquake that hit neighboring Bhutan on Sunday night.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the magnitude 5.6 quake, which struck at 11:36pm (Bangladesh time), was located 15km west-northwest of Pun?kha, a city in Bhutan, at a depth of 10km.

Tremors were also felt in India, Nepal and China, media reports said.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said the epicenter was located 432km north of the BMD Seismic Centre in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Following the quake, panicked residents in the capital and elsewhere rushed out of their homes. Many called their relatives and loved ones to inquire about their well-being.   

No casualties or property damage were reported immediately.
