Sources from Indian political party Congress have informed that the speculation about West Bengal's immediate past Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee joining Congress is groundless. Mamata Banerjee had a meeting with Congress President Sonia Gandhi a couple of days ago. Since then political turfs in India came up with a buzz that Mamata Banerjee is going to join Congress but Congress leaders have stated that nothing like this has happened yet.
Reportedly Congress has proposed Mamata Banerjee to unify certain portions of Trinamool Congress with central Indian political front Congress. Congress General Secretary KC Venu Gopal told reporters on Thursday (11 June 2026) that Mamata Banerjee is not going to join Trinamool Congress. However, presumptions in the political arena suggest that Congress might send Mamata Banerjee to Rajya Sava if Mamata Banerjee agrees with Congress over some prerequisites.
KC Venu Gopal said that Congress had discussions with Mamata Banerjee on different national issues but nothing like Mamata Banerjee's membership in Congress was negotiated in the middle of inferences that Trinamool Congress will merge with Sonia Gandhi's Congress. Another central Congress leader Jay Ram Ramesh told journalists that the news coverage on Mamata Banerjee joining Congress is not at all true. Jay Ram Ramesh added that Mamata Banerjee and Sonia Gandhi have been personally close to one another for 40 years but there is no development like Mamata Banerjee switching to Congress.
Nevertheless, reliable party sources have told news outlets that Congress backed off from taking Mamata Banerjee in the party due to strong opposition from Congress high-ups. It may be recalled that Mamata Banerjee left Congress in 1998 and founded Trinamool Congress. Most of the prominent leaders of Trinamool Congress hailed from Congress during the initial years.
