Story of Sabuj: Showcasing cattle business on TikTok

Story of Sabuj: Showcasing cattle business on TikTok

Cattle farming has long been a traditional livelihood worldwide. In Bangladesh too, it is still one of the major livelihoods. But these days, farmers like Dewan Md Sabuj are turning into digital content creators, where the journey has evolved far beyond the cowshed.

Dewan runs his cattle farm in Kalipur Thana, Gazipur, where he continues to raise and fatten cows while documenting his everyday farming journey online. He began his agro-farming business in 2019. With an initial investment of 2 lakh taka, he bought one cow and then another, which he reared for about three years.

Like many small farmers in Bangladesh, Sabuj's journey was not without setbacks. Disease outbreaks, feeding complexities, and biosecurity issues are always challenges for farm operations. He shared that when he first started with two cows, one of them died along with its calf. And this loss affected him deeply, both financially and mentally.

Out of those early struggles came a new purpose: helping others avoid mistakes. Sabuj slowly began sharing his experiences online so that new farmers could learn from his journey and make more informed decisions from the beginning. Through his videos, he now focuses on practical guidance, covering cattle care, feeding routines, and risk prevention.

For Sabuj, choosing the right platform was key to reaching a wider audience. His content has helped him connect with both aspiring farmers and general audiences interested in rural life and livestock farming.

He is known as Dewan Agro Bangladesh on TikTok (@sabuzdewan7). Regarding content creation,Sabuj said, "I think that in Bangladesh, videos on TikTok get the most visibility. A huge number of people are using this platform in this country and worldwide. Compared to YouTube, Instagram, or Facebook, TikTok helps me reach more people. I get a lot of responses from TikTok. I think people like my content type - that is why they are still interested in what I post," he said.

During this Eid-ul-Azha season, which is a crucial period for cattle farmers in Bangladesh, Sabuj saw a positive outcome. He said, "Alhamdulillah, I made a good profit this Eid. I would not like to disclose exact numbers, but whatever profit I made, I am thankful to the Almighty. And many people have come to know about my business through online, but I still went to the haat (cattle market) to sell my cows by myself," he said.

He also advised new farmers to first understand the prerequisites before starting. He added that, "starting with a large investment at the initial stage increases the risk of loss, so it is better to scale gradually. The farmers should assess how much they can personally commit to this sector before joining in this sector as well."

From a small cow farm to a growing digital footprint, Dewan Md Sabuj's journey reflects how rural entrepreneurship in Bangladesh is gradually merging with digital storytelling. His experience shows how lessons from the field are now reaching far beyond the farm through online platforms.
