Shibir leader Jisan arrested over rape, forced abortion charges

A woman has filed a rape case against an Islami Chhatra Shibir leader and three others, while police say he was not abducted as claimed but had gone into hiding of his own accord in Cumilla.

Police said Jisan Mia Pradhan, former president of the western Cumilla district unit of Chhatra Shibir and currently the organisation's central assistant international affairs secretary, was found in Laksam on Friday night (12 June). After being found at around 10pm, Jisan claimed he had been abducted and taken away in a vehicle.  However, Cumilla police said in a press release that he had not been abducted and had gone into hiding on his own.

According to police, Jisan allegedly raped a woman at his rented house in Daudkandi on 20 May after luring her with a promise of marriage.

Police said the woman later became pregnant and the foetus was terminated through medication. Police said Jisan had agreed to marry the woman on Friday, but went into hiding on Thursday to avoid the marriage.

His cousin, Russell Ahmed, subsequently filed a general diary reporting him missing.

After learning that Jisan had been found, the woman filed a case at Daudkandi Model Police Station last night, accusing four people, including Jisan, of rape, assisting rape and terminating a foetus.

Cumilla Superintendent of Police Md Anisuzzaman said Jisan had not been abducted and had gone into hiding following a dispute involving the woman.

He said the case was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and included allegations of foetus termination.
