Miscreants 'break' Haijda dam in Haor, administration suspects sabotage

Haijda Embankment sometimes referred to as Char Haijda, a vital submersible flood management and crop protection project located in Mohanganj Upazila of Netrakona district, has been broken down without strong water pressure.

Local administration and Water Development Board officials said that it is necessary to investigate whether the damaged of the dam at an untimely time without strong water pressure is sabotage.

Locals confirmed that at least twenty feet of the permanent dam on the banks of the Kangs River, about one and a half kilometers from Gaglajur Bazar in the upazila towards Jainpur, has been broken.

Talking to locals, it has been learnt that at the moment, there is no strong pressure to break a dam built in the waters of the Kangs River and Haor. It is known that in 2017, the Haijda earthen dam of Dingaputa Haor broke, completely destroying the crops of thousands of farmers in Mohanganj.

Under the Major Irrigation and Flood Control Management Project, the Water Development Board (WDB) has taken up a project worth Tk 40 crore to make the Haijda embankment permanent and strong by installing concrete CC blocks. Accordingly, the construction of the Haijda embankment was inaugurated on November 2, 2018.

The Water Development Board constructed the embankment by installing CC blocks on both sides of the high-risk 5-kilometer section of the embankment from Gaglajur to Jainpur and made it permanent by installing concrete blocks there.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Shakur Sadi said that there is no fear of crop loss due to the dam break and said that 100% of the paddy harvest in the haor has already been completed.

Hafizul Islam Harun, officer-in-charge of Mohanganj police station, said, "There is no water pressure to break the dam and said that he has not received any complaint in this regard. However, the WDB authorities have informed the matter. Legal action will be taken after investigation if a complaint is received."

Mohanganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Amena Khatun said, "The WDB has been informed to seek cooperation from the police administration after investigating the matter. I have asked the WDB officials to file a general diary in this regard."
