The Bangladesh Coast Guard has strengthened the security of the Sundarbans, remove piracy, prevent human trafficking and ensure the safety of the coastal community, said the force's director general (DG) Rear Admiral Md. Ziaul Haque.
He came up with the remarks while addressing during the inspection of the overall security situation in the Joymonir Ghol area of Chila Union in Bagerhat on Thursday afternoon.
"The Bangladesh Coast Guard is making an important contribution to national security and economic stability by protecting the country's marine resources, preventing drug and human trafficking, preventing smuggling and illegal infiltration, ensuring the safety of fishermen and coastal communities and conducting rescue operations during disasters", he said. "Under the guidance of the present government, two special operations are being conducted under the leadership of the Bangladesh Coast Guard, titled 'Operation Restore Peace in Sundarbans' and 'Operation Mangrove Shield', especially to establish law and order in the Sundarbans region and completely remove forest piracy", the DG added.
The Coast Guard claims that the bandit gangs have been largely cornered due to continuous operations, intelligence activities and the coordinated efforts of other law enforcement agencies. In continuation of this, the notorious bandit of the Sundarbans, 'Chhota Sumon' and his associates recently surrendered to the Coast Guard.
The director general said, "Due to the establishment of the Coast Guard Station Harbaria in the Jaymonir Ghol area of Mongla, which has been known as the base of forest pirates for a long time, the way of supplying logistics, logistical support, weapons and other necessary equipment to the pirates has been effectively blocked.
As a result, their criminal activities have been significantly disrupted and the law and order situation in the Sundarbans has improved." Calling on the people of the Sundarbans and coastal areas, he said, "Do not be influenced by any kind of rumors, propaganda or misleading information, have faith in the law enforcement forces and play a responsible role.
In addition, play an active role in preventing crime by reporting any criminal information to the Coast Guard emergency service number 16111 to ensure the security of the Sundarbans, conservation of biodiversity and the safe livelihood of the local people."
He also mentioned that the Bangladesh Coast Guard is always committed to protecting the security of the country's people, national interests, coastal and maritime sovereignty.
