Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has ruled out any specific security threat but said it remains on high alert surrounding the founding anniversary of the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned.
DMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Nazrul Islam came up with the remarks on Friday morning while briefing reporters at the DMP Media Centre on the Minto Road.
"June 23 is the founding anniversary of a political party. We are on alert centring on the day," he said.
Nazrul Islam said security checkpoints remain active at different locations across the capital and the measures will continue as part of efforts to maintain law and order.
Responding to a question about why police have increasingly become targets of attacks in various incidents, Nazrul Islam said, "The law and order situation after Aug 5 was challenging. We may not have achieved one hundred percent success, but we are making every effort and continuing to work towards improvement."
"We are striving to restore police morale and ensure officers can play a more active role in safeguarding the public. Those efforts will continue."
