The janaza of former state minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Vice Chairman Harun Or Rashid was held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) on Friday.
The namaz-e-janaza was led by the Pesh Imam of the JS Secretariat, Qari Md. Abu Raihan, BSS reports.
A brief biography of the late Harun Or Rashid was read out by Member of Parliament (MP) from Brahmanbaria-3 constituency Md. Khaled Hossain Mahboob.
Among those who addressed the gathering were Speaker of the JS Hafiz Uddin Ahmad ,Bir Bikram, MP; Bangladesh Nationalist Party Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, MP; Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal, MP; Whip ABM Ashraf Uddin Nizan, MP, on behalf of the Chief Whip and other whips; Member of Parliament from Dhaka-4 constituency Syed Zainul Abedin, MP, on behalf of the Leader of the Opposition; and the deceased's nephew Kamal Hossain on behalf of the family.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad expressed gratitude to all those present at the janaza.
He said Harun Or Rashid was a distinguished parliamentarian who had been elected a five times MP.
"He was courteous, noble and dedicated to serving ordinary people in his personal life," the Speaker said.
Harun Or Rashid was a trusted associate of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, he further noted.
"With his death, the country has lost a devoted patriot and political personality of nationalist ideology," he said, expressing sympathy to the bereaved family.
Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal said Harun Or Rashid was a highly knowledgeable political figure whose ideals of honesty and dedication remain exemplary.
He said Rashid made significant contributions to the restoration of democracy.
Following the janaza, tributes were paid to the coffin of the deceased by Speaker Hafiz Uddin, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on behalf of the party; Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal; Whip ABM Ashraf Uddin Nizan on behalf of the Chief Whip and other whips; the Military Secretary to the Prime Minister on behalf of the Prime Minister; and Barrister Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan and officials on behalf of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat.
After the tribute ceremony, prayers and munajat were offered seeking eternal peace and forgiveness for the departed soul.
Harun Or Rashid died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital on June 18.
Cabinet members, members of parliament, the Secretary of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat, officials and employees of the Secretariat, political leaders from Brahmanbaria and representatives of various media outlets attended the janaza.
