Leader of the Opposition and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Friday said that the government is trying to establish a one-party rule in the country like the previous Awami League government.

He came up with the allegation while addressing a workers' rally at the Central Eidgah Ground in Narayanganj city organised by the city unit of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Shafiqur Rahman said, "The government has already committed many irregularities. From appointing the central bank governor to interfering in banks like Islami Bank, removing qualified university vice-chancellors and appointing loyal party affiliates, and placing party cadres as administrators in important institutions like district councils -- these are all efforts to establish one-party rule in Bangladesh."

"History should not be forgotten. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman also established a one-party system under BaKSAL, but could not remain in power even for half a year afterward. People will not accept one-party rule in this country," he added.

Referring to the previous Awami League government, he said it used to belittle opposition parties in Parliament, particularly the BNP and Jamaat.

"The current government is also labelling and targeting opposition parties in different ways. But the people of the country do not buy these narratives," the opposition leader said.

He urged the government to understand the pulse of the younger generation "Do not follow the path of the Awami League," he said.

Chaired by Narayanganj city Jamaat Ameer Maulana Abdul Jabbar, the programme was also addressed by Jamaat central executive council member Saiful Alam Khan, MP, Dhaka South city unit Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul, MP, and Islami Chhatra Shibir President Nurul Islam Saddam.
