Legendary hockey player Abdus Sadeque passes away

National award-winning legendary hockey player AbdusSadeque passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 80. 

He breathed his last in the morning at local hospital in Gulshan after suffering from old age complication for a prolonged period. 

AbdusSadeque is survived by two sons, one daughter, relatives, friends, and hosts of admirers to mourn his death.

In addition to his distinguished career as a hockey player, AbdusSadeque also earned widespread recognition as a footballer. He served as the captain of Abahani's first football team and was widely regarded as one of Bangladesh's finest all-round sports personalities.

Mr. AbdusSadeque was the first captain of the Bangladesh National Hockey Team. In a remarkable achievement, he led both Abahani's football and hockey teams as their inaugural captain, creating a lasting legacy in the country's sports arena.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to sports, he was honored with the prestigious National Sports Award in 1996. He was also the elder brother of the Chairman of Bashundhara Group.

During his illustrious career as a player, captain, coach, organizer, and sports administrator, Sadeque made outstanding contributions to the development of hockey and football in Bangladesh. 

He also had the distinction of captaining the first international hockey team of independent Bangladesh, leading the country with pride on the global stage.

His remarkable dedication, leadership, and contribution to Bangladesh sports will always be remembered with great respect and admiration.

Following his playing career, he continued to contribute to the country's sporting community as a sports organizer.

According to family sources, his first Janaza was held after Asr at BaitusSobhan Mosque in Bashundhara residential area, block L. The second Janaza will take place on Sunday at 10:30 am at the Banani DOHS field.

Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of national sports award-winning legendary hockey player and sports figure AbdusSadeque, said a press release.

He breathed his last at 7:38 a.m. at a hospital in the city's Gulshan after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 80.

His remarkable achievements and lifelong dedication to sports have left a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of athletes.

The BFF president TabithAwal, along with the senior vice president, vice presidents, members of the executive committee, the general secretary, members of all standing committees and the federation's officials and staff expressed profound grief over the death of AbdusSadeque and also conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
