The prices of vehicle tires are likely to increase by 15–30 percent following the hike in customs duties proposed in the national budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year, according to leaders of the Chattogram Tire-Tube Importers and Dealers Group.
Speaking at a press conference held at the World Trade Center in Agrabad on Sunday, the business leaders expressed deep concern over the increased tax burden, warning that it could significantly affect the country's transport, agriculture, construction, industrial and trade sectors.
According to the speakers, the proposed budget has increased the combined customs duty and regulatory duty on tires under HS Code 4011.20.10, raising the total tax incidence from 63 percent to 96 percent. They described the sharp increase as abrupt and potentially damaging to businesses and consumers alike.
The association noted that Bangladesh remains heavily dependent on imported tires, with 88–92 percent of commercial vehicle tires under the relevant HS code being imported. These tires are widely used in trucks, buses, trailers, pickup vans and other light commercial vehicles. The new tariff structure is expected to substantially raise import costs, which may ultimately push retail tire prices up by 15–30 percent, the leaders said.
They urged the government to hold consultations with relevant business associations, transport operators and other stakeholders before making a final decision on the proposed duty hike. Such consultations, they argued, would help strike a balance between revenue generation and market stability while minimizing the potential impact on transport costs and inflation.
Among those who addressed the press conference were Main Uddin Ahmed Mintu, President of the Chattogram Tire-Tube Importers and Dealers Group; Vice Presidents Md. Moktar Hossain and Md. Sanaullah; General Secretary Md. Shahjahan; Joint General Secretary and Proprietor of The Tyre, Shaifuddin Ahmed; Organizing Secretary Md. Samawat Hossain Ripon; Finance Secretary Abdul Wahid Chowdhury; and Office Secretary Ariful Islam.
The event was also attended by Morshed Hossain Nizami, Senior Vice President of the Chattogram Prime Mover and Flatbed Owners Association; Mohammad Hossain, General Secretary of the association; Mohammad Shamsuzzaman Sumon, Port Secretary of the Inter-District Goods Transport Organization Truck and Covered Van Owners Association; Akhtar Hossain of Eagle Transport; and other transport sector representatives.
