A leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir was killed and another person injured in a clash over the formation of a managing committee of a government primary school at Saghata upazila of Gaibandha district on Sunday afternoon.
The incident took place at the four-way intersection of Bonarpara area around 3:30PM, according to police and local sources.
The deceased was identified as Saifullah Bari, 24, president of Bonarpara union unit of Chhatra Shibir and a student of the Al Quran department at Rangpur Dhap Satgara Model Kamil Madrasa. His friend Salauddin, 30, was critically injured in the attack.
Bonarpara Union Parishad Chairman Nasirul Alam Swapan confirmed the incident.
Local sources said an argument broke out between two groups over the managing committee of Kachua Government Primary School. At one stage, former Bonarpara union Jubo Dal president Mukul and his brother Palash allegedly attacked Saifullah and Salauddin.
Witnesses said Palash struck Saifullah on the throat with an iron spade, while Salauddin was allegedly stabbed during the attack. Saifullah was taken to Gaibandha General Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.
Salauddin was first taken to a local hospital and later shifted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for advanced treatment.
According to police, the accused Mukul and Palash are brothers and residents of Bati village under Bonarpara union. Mukul was reportedly a former Jubo Dal leader but is currently expelled from the organisation.
Saghata Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Pavitra Kumar said police teams were working to investigate the incident and arrest those involved.
