Swiss Ambassador to Bangladesh Reto Renggli has praised Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, MP, for his role in making the 13th Parliament effective by earning the confidence of both treasury and opposition benches. The appreciation came when the Swiss envoy paid a courtesy call on the Speaker at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Monday.
During the meeting, the Speaker expressed hope that the current parliament, formed in the aftermath of the mass uprising, would uphold the aspirations of the movement, earn the trust of the people and complete its tenure successfully, reports BSS.
He thanked Switzerland, as a member state of the European Union bloc for its support to capacity building of parliamentarians and urged to continue the support in strengthening democracy and democratic institutions.
The Speaker also proposed formation of inter-parliamentary teams between Bangladesh and Switzerland to facilitate the exchange of parliamentary experiences and best practices.
Seeking Switzerland's cooperation in strengthening parliamentary activities through the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the Speaker stressed the importance of expanding cultural exchange to further deepen people-to-people relation between the two countries. He also requested the continuation of Swiss support for Bangladesh's development efforts.
Ambassador Renggli expressed optimism that both countries would be benefitted from sharing parliamentary experiences.
The envoy reiterated Switzerland's commitment to continue its cooperation with Bangladesh in humanitarian assistance, education, economic development, climate resilience and private sector development.
