Manikganj school girl's dismembered body found: Police launch probe

Police have launched a formal investigation following the grim discovery of a missing 14-year-old student's dismembered body in Manikganj's Singair Upazila on Sunday afternoon.

Maria Akter, an eighth-grader at Sahrayl High School, was found dead in a thicket near a cemetery in Chandannagar, Jarmirtta Union, six days after she mysteriously vanished on June 15, 2026.

According to the law enforcement officials, the local people informed the authorities after discovering the partially decomposed remains, with the upper portion of the body found hanging from a tree by a scarf and the lower half lying on the ground.

Investigative leads reveal that Akter went missing the exact day her school issued her a transfer certificate, a disciplinary action triggered by a tiffin-break conduct complaint involving a tenth-grade classmate, Alif Hossain, which was captured on CCTV.

Following a missing person's report filed by the victim's family, police have since taken Alif into custody for interrogation.

The body has been transferred to the Manikganj Medical College Hospital morgue for a forensic autopsy as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the homicide.
