The lifelong appointment of prominent physician Dr. A B M Abdullah as an Emeritus Professor at Bangladesh Medical University has been cancelled. In a decisive move, the university authorities have also ordered him to refund all salaries and financial benefits drawn during his tenure in the position.
The decision was formalized through an office order issued on Wednesday (25 June 2026), signed by the university's Registrar, Professor Dr. Md Mostafa Kamal. According to the official directive, the "Emeritus Professor Appointment Ordinance" was amended outside the scheduled agenda during the Syndicate's 92nd budget session on 20 June 2024, following a proposal raised by a member.
During that same meeting, Dr. A B M Abdullah was reappointed as an Emeritus Professor for life. The university stated that this procedure bypassed standard regulations,
making the appointment legally untenable. The order further specified that, in accordance with resolutions passed during the 99th Syndicate meeting on 13 June 2026, Dr. Abdullah's lifelong appointment stands officially rescinded. Consequently, he has been directed to return all financial benefits and salaries received under the title, retroactively effective from the date of the 92nd session (20 June 2024).
