Newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi presented credentials to President Mohammed Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban on Thursday (25 June 2026).

Dinesh Trivedi arrived in Bangladesh by road on 12 June 2026 to formally take over his diplomatic posting at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.

At the same time Dinesh Trivedi informed journalists that India will restart issuing tourist visas to Bangladeshi nationals with immediate effect which was stalled for nearly two years. Radical outfits during the immediate past interim government demonstrated against India and posed threats to Indian diplomats in Bangladesh as a result of which visa procedure on both sides was temporarily closed down and Bangladesh suffered huge drawbacks in regional trade. However, the stalemate in visa issuing operations has been resolved through Dinesh Trivedi's latest announcement that Bangladeshis can apply for Indian visas from 28 June 2026.

Foreign affairs experts and geopolitical specialists have expressed hope that Bangladesh-India ties will gain further momentum under Dinesh Trivedi's sagacious and competent diplomacy. Dinesh Trivedi stated to reporters right after his arrival in Bangladesh that he will be working vigorously for consolidating friendly relations between Dhaka and New Delhi which radiates with a ray of optimism after a gloomy period caused by mob violence and extremism following the regime change that hit the streets in August 2024.

People from Bangladesh now can apply for Indian visa from Rajshahi, Chittagong, Sylhet and Khulna divisions.

Dinesh Trivedi and his wife Mrinal Trivedi crossed into Bangladesh around two weeks ago through the Benapole Immigration Checkpost in Jessore's Sharsha upazila via the Benapole land port.

He was formally received at the border by Indian Deputy High Commissioner in Bangladesh Pawan Kumar Tulsi Das and Deputy Chief of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Arif Mahmud. They welcomed the incoming envoy at the Benapole-Petrapole no-man's land with floral greetings.

Senior officials present on the occasion included Benapole Port Director Shamin Hossain, Sharsha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Fazle Wahid, Immigration Officer-in-Charge Syed Mortuza Ali, and Officer-in-Charge of Benapole Port Police Station Ashraf Hossain, among others.
