Bangladesh Police on Saturday dismissed as false a social media claim that the bodies of seven activists of the banned Awami League and its student wing Chhatra League had been found floating in the Turag River.
In a statement, Police Headquarters said a post circulating on social media under the headline "Bodies of seven Awami League-Chhatra League leaders and activists found floating in the Turag River" was completely unfounded and aimed at creating confusion among the public.
Police Headquarters has requested everyone not to be misled by 'false propaganda', claiming that no such incident has been reported.
The statement alleged that a vested group was spreading the misinformation in an attempt to undermine the morale of law enforcement agencies.
Police said they were actively working to identify those responsible for spreading the false information and would take legal action against anyone found involved in the misinformation campaign.
The law enforcement agency also urged the public not to pay heed to rumours or unverified information circulating on social media.
