9th National men's baseball meet begins
The three-day national competition is taking place under the organisation of Bangladesh Baseball Softball Federation (BBSA) and with the overall cooperation of Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defense Force. -BBSA

The 9th National Men's Baseball championship started on Friday with colourful opening ceremony at the Bangladesh Ansar Academy in Safipur, Gazipur.

The three-day national competition is taking place under the organisation of Bangladesh Baseball Softball Federation (BBSA) and with the overall cooperation of Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defense Force.

Director General of the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party Major General Abdul MotalebSazzad Mahmud inaugurated the meet as the chief guest.

The program was presided over by Md. AfzalurRahman, President of Bangladesh Baseball Softball Federation (BBSA).

"The power of baseball, the promise of youth; Sports will be a profession, families will get trust" - a total of 14 teams from various district sports organizations and clubs of the country, including Bangladesh Police, Bangladesh Ansar, are participating in this competition.

In his speech at the inaugural ceremony, the chief guest said, "Involving the youth of the country in positive activities and organizing a modern and promising game like baseball to develop their latent talents is a timely initiative."

He also said that it will be possible to spread baseball in remote areas of the country through the organizational network of Bangladesh Ansar and VDP extending to the grassroots level. As a result, the youth will be inspired to live a healthy and disciplined lifestyle away from drugs, crime and social degradation.

The Director General further mentioned that the involvement of Bangladesh Ansar and VDP in this tournament is an expression of the organizational capacity.

He expressed hope that although the globally popular baseball game is currently in its initial stage of development in Bangladesh, it will become one of the most popular games in the country in the future through joint efforts.

Also present at the event were Bangladesh Baseball Softball Federation Senior Vice President Dr. AnupamHossain, General Secretary TalhaZubair, Tournament Committee Chairman Dr. ArafeJawad, Joint Secretary Imam Hossain, Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defense Force Additional Director General Brigadier General Mamunur Rashid, NDC, PSC, Deputy Director General (Deputy Commandant) Md. Saifullah Russell, BAM, PAMS, BVMS and Director (Sports and Culture) MirzaSifat-e-Khoda, BVM.and other officials of the federation.

A total of six matches were held in the knockout phase of the first day. Savar Community Club defeated Sand Angels Club by 7-5 runs to advance to the quarterfinals. Dhaka District defeated Naogaon District Sports Association by 11-1 runs. Munshiganj District defeated Chittagong Baseball Club by 9-8 runs to advance to the next round. Joypurhat District defeated Bogra District by 8-1 runs. Bagerhat District defeated Chapainawabganj District by 1-0 runs. Joypurhat Baseball Club qualified for the quarterfinals by defeating Narayanganj District Baseball Team by 9-8 runs.

The tournament will conclude on Sunday with the third-place match, final and prize distribution ceremony.

State Minister of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mr. Md. AminulHaque, will be present as the chief guest at the final and closing ceremonies and will distribute prizes among the winners.

The BBSA expressed its hope that this national championship will play an important role in developing baseball in Bangladesh, exploring new talents and producing international-level players.

The champions will receive Taka 50,000 while the runners-up and third place finishers will have Taka 25,000 and Taka 15,000 respectively. Besides, the fourth place finishers will get Taka 10,000.
