Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain Bokul has said that there is no greater vitamin than a mother's breast milk for a child's growth and disease prevention.
He made the remarks on Sunday at the inauguration of the National Vitamin A Campaign at the Abu Sayeed Convention Hall of Bangladesh Medical University in the capital. The minister said that alongside breastfeeding, children should also be given Vitamin A capsules. He noted that children aged 6 to 59 months are being provided with Vitamin A capsules under the nationwide campaign. He added that the Health Ministry aims to provide Vitamin A capsules to 24 million children this year.
Sakhawat Hossain further said that Vitamin A strengthens children's immunity and plays an effective role in preventing various diseases, including measles.
He also informed that the government has procured 26 million red and blue Vitamin A capsules through UNICEF. Of these, 25.5 million capsules have already been distributed across the country for the campaign.
Replying to a question about the quality of the capsules, the minister told journalists that their quality is good. He said that he had recently attended a conference in Europe, where the quality of the vaccines was discussed with UNICEF, which assured them of their high quality. He added that the vaccines were also tested in international laboratories before being brought into the country.
Health Secretary Kamruzzaman Chowdhury, Director General of Health Professor Dr. Probhat Chandra Biswas and Director of the Institute of Public Health Nutrition Dr. Mohammad Yunus Ali were present at the event.
