BAAG honours two Independence Award winners

The Bangladesh Academy of Agriculture (BAAG) on Sunday accorded a grand felicitation to its distinguished Fellows, Professor Dr. Zahirul Karim and Professor Dr. Md. Abdur Rahim, recipients of the Independence Award 2026, the highest civilian honour of Bangladesh, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to agricultural science and national development. 

The ceremony was held at the Conference Room of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC), bringing together eminent scientists, academicians, policymakers, university teachers, researchers and agricultural professionals from across the country, according to a press release.

The programme was graced by Dr. Md. Abdus Salam, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC), as the Guest of Honour, while Professor Dr. Lutfur Rahman, President of the Bangladesh Academy of Agriculture (BAAG), presided over the event.

Welcoming the distinguished guests, BAAG leaders described the national recognition of Professors Zahirul Karim and Abdur Rahim as a proud milestone for the country's agricultural research community. They noted that the achievements of the two scientists exemplify the vital role of science, innovation and visionary leadership in strengthening Bangladesh's food security, agricultural productivity and climate resilience.

The programme featured the presentation of commemorative crests and formal citations in honour of the two eminent scientists, followed by reflections from distinguished Fellows and invited guests celebrating their lifelong contributions to agricultural research, higher education and national development. 

Speaking on the significance of the occasion, BAAG leaders highlighted that the Academy's Fellows have long been at the forefront of Bangladesh's agricultural transformation. Through pioneering research, technological innovation, academic leadership and evidence-based policy support, BAAG Fellows have made enduring contributions to food security, rural livelihoods and sustainable agricultural development.
