‘Budget a roadmap to rebuild economy from ruins left by previous govt’
LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said the proposed national budget for FY2026-27 is not merely a statement of income and expenditure but a clear roadmap for rebuilding the country's economy from the crisis left behind by the previous government.
Taking part in the general discussion on the proposed budget in the Jatiya Sangsad, he said the country's economy had virtually been reduced to ruins during the "15 years of fascist rule".
Following the July mass uprising and the subsequent political change, Bangladesh has gained a fresh opportunity to recover, and the present government is working sincerely to restore the fragile economy.The minister said Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury demonstrated courage by taking charge under extremely challenging circumstances. Accepting the daunting task, he has presented a realistic and forward-looking budget aimed at steering the country towards economic recovery.
He said although many have described the budget as ambitious, the BNP has repeatedly proved its ability to overcome crises and move the country forward.
Recalling the party's previous achievements, he said BNP led the country towards economic and democratic progress under the leadership of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman after 1975 and Begum Khaleda Zia in 1991. He expressed optimism that the present government would also succeed in revitalising the economy in the same spirit.
Fakhrul said the proposed budget rests on three key pillars-Recovery and Stabilisation, Restoration and Reconstruction. The government aims to restore macroeconomic stability within one year, carry out reforms in revenue administration and the financial sector while expanding investment and exports within three years, and build an innovation-driven and inclusive economic structure over the next five years.
He said the BNP has always turned crises into opportunities and achieved success by overcoming challenges, adding that the proposed budget reflects the same confidence.
Referring to the government's foreign engagements, the minister said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's recent visits to China and Malaysia have enhanced Bangladesh's international standing and opened up new opportunities for foreign investment and economic cooperation.
He expressed hope that under the Prime Minister's leadership, Bangladesh would overcome the current economic challenges and advance rapidly towards sustainable development.
Expressing his full support for the proposed budget, Mirza Fakhrul said its successful implementation would pave the way for economic recovery, employment generation and fulfilment of the people's aspirations.
BNP’s other lawmakers described the proposed national budget for FY2026-27 as "time-befitting," saying it would bring significant changes in human resource development, public welfare and economic reforms.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury unveiled the Tk 9.38 trillion budget on June 11, setting a GDP growth target of 6.5 percent, aiming to recover from the provisional 4.14 percent growth recorded in the outgoing fiscal year.
Congratulating the finance minister, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said the budget prioritizes human resource development, investment, employment generation and economic reforms. "The government plans designed in the proposed budget are not visible immediately but will be visible within the next six months," he said.
"The Finance Minister has taken the challenge and we hope that he will successfully implement the budget and be able to reach the goal," he said. Industries, Commerce, Textiles and Jute Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir expressed confidence that the finance minister would achieve the budget's objectives within the stipulated timeframe.
Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment and Minister of Labour and Employment Ariful Haque Chowdhury said proper implementation of the budget would improve people's livelihoods.
