MIST wins world title in underwater robotics competition in Canada

A team from the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) has won the MATE ROV 2026 World Championship in the Pioneer Class at the prestigious MATE ROV Competition held in Canada.

The competition took place from June 23 to 27 in Newfoundland and Labrador, where MIST's flagship underwater robot, MAVIRIO ROV, secured the overall championship by competing against 77 teams from 18 countries, achieving the highest combined score across all competition categories. The victory reflects the team's expertise in planning, designing and developing advanced underwater robotic systems, according to a media release of MIST issued on Wednesday.

The MAVIRIO ROV is a remotely operated underwater robot developed to carry out complex engineering missions beneath the water. It is designed for ocean exploration, marine environmental monitoring, underwater infrastructure inspection, and repair operations.

Organized by the Marine Technology Society (MTS), the MATE ROV Competition is one of the World's leading underwater robotics contests. Every year, it brings together top university teams from around the world to solve real-life marine engineering challenges through innovation and technology.

The MIST Mavirov team consists of students from the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Communication Engineering.

Under the guidance of Captain Mohammad Moinul Hasan, the team includes 11 core members and 24 general members. Meghna Group of Industries (MGI) and Pubali Bank Limited PLC were the Gold Sponsors, supporting the team's journey to Canada and helping make this international achievement possible.

Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Coast Guard also gave an immense support to this team.
