Police will step up surveillance at public venues screening World Cup matches on giant screens across the capital in an effort to prevent violence and untoward incidents.

Additional Commissioner (Detective Branch) Shafiqul Islam said this to reporters at a briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road in the capital on Friday.

The DB chief said, "Police stations across Dhaka have been instructed to identify locations where matches are being screened on large displays and maintain a security presence there."

"Members of both the local police stations and the DB will be deployed there to ensure no untoward incident takes place," he added.

Urging residents to celebrate responsibly, Shafiqul said: "Let joy remain joy and not turn into tragedy. Winning and losing are part of sport. Celebrate your team's victory, but remain tolerant of others' opinions and support."
