A group of teenage gang members have allegedly attacked the office of Belal Hossain Riaz, Upazila correspondent of Mohona Television and editor of the weekly Amadar Nangalkot newspaper, in Nangalkot of Cumilla.
The incident took place on the second floor of the upazila's Road Amin Tower at around 7:30 pm on Thursday (July 2). The victim said that the miscreants threatened the journalist with weapons.
?According to the victim journalist and local sources, Belal Hossain Riaz was working on a news report in his office on the second floor of Amin Tower on Thursday evening. At that time, a group of teenage gang members wearing masks entered his office. They pointed weapons at journalist Riaz and tried to take him out of the office. During this, panic spread among the madrasa students and families living in the building.
Journalist Belal Hossain Riaz said, "I was working on the news in the office. Suddenly, a group of masked teenagers came to me, pointed a pistol at me and said, 'Get out of the office, we have a conversation with you. When I refused to leave, they tried to take me away by threatening me. At one point, I tactfully informed the police, but sensing the police's arrival, they quickly fled the scene." Later, the police came and rescued me. A case has been filed at the police station in this incident, he said.
Nangalkot Press Club President Mujibur Rahman Mollah, General Secretary Saiful Islam, Organizing Secretary Kamal Hossain Joni, along with the leaders of the press club and the journalist community have strongly condemned this incident.
The leaders said, "It is very sad and worrying to publicly enter a journalist's office and threaten him with a weapon. We demand that the law enforcement agencies, including the police administration, promptly identify the criminals involved through a proper investigation into this incident and give exemplary punishment."
Contacted, Nangalkot Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shahinur Islam said, "The matter will be looked into and necessary legal action will be taken soon on investigation."
