After years of neglect, the playing field of Lalbagh-based UditoTarun Club has been restored through a renovation initiative funded by Dhaka-7 Member of Parliament AlhajHamidurRahman Hamid, bringing renewed hope to young athletes in the area.
The ground, located beside Rahmatullah Girls' Branch School, has been thoroughly cleaned and renovated, making it suitable for sports once again. Local residents believe the project has revived one of the few remaining open spaces for children and teenagers, who had long been deprived of a proper venue for outdoor games and physical activities.
According to club officials, nearly 40 workers worked continuously for three days to clear construction materials, debris and waste that had accumulated on the field over a long period, rendering it unusable for sports.
Members of UditTarun Club also played a vital role in the restoration work. The initiative was coordinated by club president Sanwar Islam Soni, general secretary H.R. Russell and executive member Akash Mahmud, while other members contributed through voluntary labour and logistical support.
In a Facebook post, MP HamidurRahman Hamid said the long-awaited renovation had restored the vitality of the ground. He noted that the project was completed with his personal funding and expressed hope that regular sporting activities and tournaments would help young people grow up in a healthy, disciplined and positive environment.
"A playground is not merely a place for sports; it is where the dreams of the younger generation take shape, childhood memories are created, friendships are strengthened and a healthy society is nurtured," the lawmaker wrote.
Welcoming the initiative, UditTarun Club General Secretary H.R. Russell described the renovation as a milestone for the local sporting community.
"This contribution from MP Hamid Bhai is invaluable for us. With the field now ready for sports, children, teenagers and club members will once again be able to practice regularly, organize tournaments and participate in various sporting activities. It will encourage more young people to become involved in sports," he said.
Russell also highlighted the shortage of quality playing fields and professional coaching facilities in the Lalbagh area, which he said has hindered the development of talented athletes. He added that the issue had been discussed with the MP, who assured the club of continued support and patronage to help develop world-class players from the area.
Beyond sports, Russell said, UditTarun Club remains committed to social welfare and humanitarian activities for underprivileged communities. Looking ahead, the club aims to establish professional teams in football, cricket, hockey, chess and badminton, with the ambition of competing in national leagues.
