Man arrested for burying wife after killing in Moulvibazar

A man who allegedly murdered his wife and buried her body nearly three weeks ago in the Karimpur tea garden area of Rajnagar upazila, Moulvibazar, has been arrested after his own attempt to mislead the police backfired.

The accused, identified as Alamgir, had staged a "missing drama" for approximately 20 days to allegedly cover up the crime. However, the General Diary (GD) he filed at the police station to divert suspicion ultimately led to his downfall. According to police and local sources, a family dispute reportedly led Alamgir to kill his wife about 20 to 22 days ago. He secretly buried the body near their home and told neighbours and relatives that she had gone missing.

As days passed without any trace of the woman, her concerned relatives grew suspicious and questioned Alamgir, who continued to maintain his innocence. In an effort to avoid further suspicion, he eventually went to Rajnagar police station to file a GD.

Investigating officers noticed significant inconsistencies in his statements and observed unusual behaviour during his visit. Following intensive interrogation, Alamgir broke down and confessed to the murder, revealing where he had hidden the remains.

Based on his confession, Rajnagar Police exhumed the body on Monday morning. The discovery drew a large crowd to the scene, sparking intense grief and anger in the community. Local residents staged a protest march demanding death penalty for the accused.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Farid Uddin Ahmed Bhuiyan, confirmed that the body has been sent to Sadar hospital morgue for an autopsy. "The killer husband has been detained, and a murder case has been registered in connection with the incident," OC said.

Police are currently investigating the primary motive behind the killing, whether anyone else was involved, and if there was a premeditated plan to destroy evidence.
