Landslide kills 8 at madrasa in Cox's Bazar Rohingya camp

Eight people, including seven children and a teacher, were killed and several others injured as a landslide triggered by heavy rain hit a madrasa in a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila of Cox's Bazar on Wednesday. 

The tragic incident occurred at around 2:30 pm at Khadijatul Kubra Women's Madrasa and Hifzkhana, located in Block A-3 of Rohingya Camp-5 in Ukhiya. 

Additional Superintendent of Police of the 14 Armed Police Battalion (APBn), Mrityunjoy Dey Sajal, confirmed the matter.

He said that classes were in progress at the madrasa when a large portion of a nearby hill suddenly collapsed onto the building, burying the students under mud and debris.

Identities of five deceased students were identified. They were Rashida Begum, 13, daughter of Hashim Ullah of Block A-11; Umme Nejatul (13) and her sister Umme Salma (12), daughter of Abdus Shukur of Block F-1 in Camp-3, Umaisa Bibi (13), daughter of Mohammad Ilias of Block A-8 in Camp-5; and Shahida, daughter of Shamsu Alam of Camp 3.

Identities of three of the deceased could not be confirmed as of filing this report.

Immediately after the incident, local residents, volunteers, and members of law enforcement agencies joined the rescue operation. Ukhiya Fire Service Station Officer Dollar Tripura said that firefighters rushed to the scene and launched a rescue operation upon receiving information.
