BKB and BRAC Bank secure top spots in sourcing remittances

BKB and BRAC Bank secure top spots in sourcing remittances

Bangladesh Krishi Bank (BKB) and BRAC Bank makes major strides with stepping into the top three spots of remittance sourcing banks in the just-concluded financial year (FY'26).

Though the share of Islami Bank Bangladesh in remittance bagging declined a bit but it maintained the top position in the tally of remittance-netting banks like other years in FY'26 while BKB and BRAC emerged as the second and third most remittance earners, according to the BB data. Sources at the BKB and BRAC said the result was driven by an expanding network of global exchange house partnerships, host-to-host technology integrations, a wide agent banking footprint, and a growing suite of products designed for non-resident Bangladeshis and their families. According to the official data, Bangladesh made a new record of inner remittance in FY"26 with the annualised figure having surged to $ 35.56 billion, which was more than 17 per cent higher from $30.33 billion recorded in previous FY'25. The top five remittance-bagging banks in FY'26 are Islami Bank Bangladesh ($6.89 billion), BKB ($4.10 billion), BRAC Bank ($2.98 billion), Trust Bank ($2.50 billion) and Agrani Bank ($2.49 billion). In FY'25, the top five banks were Islami Bank Bangladesh ($4.97 billion), Agrani Bank ($2.85 billion), Janata Bank ($2.15 billion) and BKB ($2.11 billion).

Md. Mostafizur Rahman, general manager of international and accounts division of the BKB, said the management following advice of their board members has given serious concentration to this business area from 2019 to boost its stock of foreign currencies to meet government's import obligations taking the advantage of the lenders' countrywide networks.

Since then, he said, they keep putting their utmost efforts with expanding network of global exchange house partnerships, integrating cutting edge technology to ensure instant transfer of money and a growing pool of products designed for non-resident Bangladeshis and their families.

"These basically help gain trust of the remitters which is being reflected in the recent data," he said.

Since FY 2022-23, the BKB has strategically focused on the remittance sector, achieving remarkable growth and becoming the leading public bank in remittance collection, with over $4.0 billion in remittance inflows in FY26, he also added.

Seeking anonymity, a senior executive of BRAC Bank said the bank has secured the 3rd position among all banks in Bangladesh for Wage Earners' Remittance in FY'26, processing a total remittance volume of $ 2,971.92 million, according to the latest sector-wide data. This performance places BRAC Bank ahead of several long-established banks and reinforces its standing as one of the country's leading banks for inward remittance.

"This result reflects the trust that Bangladeshi expatriates continue to place in BRAC Bank as their preferred partner for sending money home safely, quickly, and affordably," he said.

The Bank has successfully built out its remittance ecosystem with tailored savings products for both senders and beneficiaries. Eligible individuals can open these accounts within minutes, from anywhere, through BRAC Bank's fully digital onboarding system. Powered by Astha, the Bank's internet banking super app, account holders can access a full suite of banking services from anywhere in the world, he said.

The executive also informed that BRAC Bank remains focused on strengthening its remittance ecosystem through continued investment in technology, compliance, and customer service, as it works toward further improving its position in the national remittance rankings in the coming fiscal year.

Acting managing director of Islami Bank Bangladesh Md. Altaf Hossain said the recent chaos in the bank over control of its operational board slowdown the remittance-sourcing growth in June last. Despite the fact, the bank managed to maintain the top spot. "Our dedicated customer service, countrywide network and goodwill are our strength. Now we're back in track again," he added.
