ASM IU chapter gets new committee


A new 15-member executive committee of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Student Chapter at Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia has been formed for the 2026-2027 session. Md. Mehedi Hasan and Avinandan Paul Seemanto of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering department have been elected as new president and secretary respectively. 

Other executive members are- Umme Habiba Hafsa, Rima Akter, Jiddi Murshida, Fakhrul Islam Rafi, S M Khusnur Ahmed, Ishrak Uz-Zaman, Rahat Masrur, Samrat Akbar Soumik, Mohammad Polok Mridha, Safin Khan, Hasibur Rahman, Mithila Saha and Shishir Biswash.

The election was conducted on Friday, under the supervision of ASM Country Ambassador and Faculty Advisor Dr. Minnatul Karim Akanda. The newly elected committee will oversee the chapter's academic, research and outreach activities for the next one year.

Expressing gratitude after his election, President Md. Mehedi Hasan thanked the members for their confidence in him and said he would work to make the chapter more active, research-oriented and student-friendly by utilizing his previous experience as the chapter's general secretary.

"With the cooperation of everyone, we will strengthen research activities, expand student engagement and build a more vibrant ASM Student Chapter," he added.

General Secretary Avinandan Paul Seemanto also thanked the members for electing him and pledged to ensure effective coordination and communication among members while implementing the chapter's planned activities.

"With the support of the president, the executive committee and all members, we aim to contribute to research, skill development and scientific awareness through various academic initiatives," he said.

Faculty Advisor and ASM Country Ambassador Dr. Minnatul Karim Akanda said the American Society for Microbiology is committed to promoting scientific research, education and public awareness through student engagement.

"We will continue to work towards these goals through seminars, workshops, research training, science competitions, outreach programmes and national and international collaborations. I believe the newly elected committee will take the ASM Student Chapter at Islamic University to new heights," he said.
